Traveling with pets takes some planning, but it can be an amazing experience! Here’s how to make it as smooth as possible:
1. Plan Ahead
• Check pet-friendly accommodations (hotels, rentals, campgrounds).
• Research pet policies for airlines, trains, or other transport.
• Locate nearby vets in case of emergencies.
2. Road Trip Essentials
• Secure Travel Crates or Seatbelts – Keeps them safe in the car.
• Frequent Breaks – Stop every 2-3 hours for potty breaks and stretching.
• Hydration & Snacks – Pack a collapsible water bowl, bottled water, and their favorite treats.
• Ventilation – Keep the car cool and never leave them alone in a parked vehicle.
3. Flying with Pets
• Cabin vs. Cargo – If flying, small pets can go in the cabin, but bigger dogs usually have to go in cargo.
• Check Airline Policies – Every airline has different rules for pet travel.
• Health Certificate – Some airlines and destinations require vet paperwork.
4. Lodging & Accommodations
• Pet-Friendly Hotels & Airbnbs – Confirm rules about size, number of pets, and fees.
• Bring Familiar Items – Their bed, blanket, and toys will help them feel at home.
5. Packing List for Your Pack
• Food & water
• Collapsible bowls
• Leashes & harnesses
• Poop bags & litter for the cat
• Medications & first aid kit
• Comfort items (toys, blankets)
• ID tags & microchips updated with your contact info
6. Keeping Them Comfortable
• Stick to their routine as much as possible.
• Give them extra exercise before long trips.
• Play calming music or use anxiety-reducing products (like calming sprays or chews).
What should I feed my rescue pets?
Feeding your pet a well-balanced diet is essential for their recovery and overall health. Consult with a veterinarian to determine the best food options based on their age, size, and any specific dietary needs. Quality nutrition plays a key role in their well-being, energy levels, and longevity.
For my girls, I feed four of them Instinct Raw Boost Beef Dry Dog Food, while one is on Hill’s Prescription Diet C/D Multicare Urinary Care (Chicken Flavor) due to specific health needs. I also mix in fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins—whatever I have on hand—to add variety and extra nutrients.
Foods That Are Toxic to Dogs
Never feed your dog the following, as they can be harmful or even fatal:
Highly Toxic Foods:
• Chocolate – Contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs.
• Grapes & Raisins – Can cause kidney failure.
• Onions & Garlic – Can damage red blood cells and cause anemia.
• Xylitol (Artificial Sweetener) – Found in gum, peanut butter, and some baked goods; can cause hypoglycemia and liver failure.
• Alcohol – Even small amounts can be dangerous.
• Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Energy Drinks) – Can cause heart problems and seizures.
• Macadamia Nuts – Can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia.
Dangerous & Potentially Toxic:
• Avocado (Pit & Skin) – Contains persin, which can be toxic in large amounts.
• Raw Dough (Yeast Dough) – Expands in the stomach and can cause bloat or alcohol poisoning.
• Cooked Bones – Can splinter and cause choking or digestive injuries.
• Fatty Foods (Fried Foods, Greasy Meats) – Can lead to pancreatitis.
• Salt & Salty Snacks (Chips, Pretzels, etc.) – Too much salt can cause sodium poisoning.
Other Foods to Avoid:
• Citrus Fruits (Lemons, Limes, Oranges in Large Amounts) – Can cause stomach upset.
• Apple Seeds & Fruit Pits (Cherry, Peach, Plum, Apricot, etc.) – Contain cyanide and can be toxic.
• Nutmeg & Other Spices (Cinnamon in Large Quantities, etc.) – Can be toxic to dogs.
Keeping your pet’s diet safe and nutritious is one of the best ways to ensure they live a long, happy life!
How can I help rescue animals?
Helping rescue animals can be incredibly rewarding, and there are many ways you can make a difference, whether you have time, resources, or skills to offer. Here are some ways to get involved:
1. Adopt or Foster
• Adopt – If you’re ready for a lifelong commitment, adopting a rescue pet gives them a second chance at a loving home.
• Foster – Temporarily care for animals until they find a permanent home. This helps shelters free up space and allows animals to adjust to home life.
2. Volunteer at Shelters or Rescues
• Walk dogs, socialize cats, clean kennels, or assist with daily tasks.
• Help with transport for rescue animals from shelters to fosters or adopters.
• Offer photography or social media skills to help animals get adopted faster.
3. Donate Supplies or Money
• Shelters always need food, blankets, toys, beds, and medical supplies.
• Monetary donations help cover vet bills, medical care, and rescue operations.
• Even small monthly donations can make a huge impact.
4. Advocate & Spread Awareness
• Share adoptable animals on social media to increase visibility.
• Educate others about the importance of spaying/neutering and adopting instead of buying.
• Speak up against animal cruelty and unethical breeding practices.
5. Help with TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) for Stray Cats
• If you see stray or feral cats in your area, connect with local TNR programs to get them spayed/neutered and returned safely.
6. Support Local & National Rescue Organizations
• Many rescues rely on volunteers and donations to operate. Find reputable groups in your area and see how you can contribute.
7. Use Your Skills to Help
• If you’re creative, design flyers, websites, or social media posts for rescues.
• If you’re good at training, offer basic obedience lessons for newly adopted dogs.
• If you have extra space, host adoption or fundraising events.
8. Be a Responsible Pet Owner
• Provide the best care for your own pets so they never end up in a shelter.
• Microchip, spay/neuter, and keep them safe.
Every effort counts, and even small actions can make a big impact in the lives of rescue animals!
What are the benefits of adopting a rescue pet?
Adopting a rescue pet is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make. Here are some of the biggest benefits:
1. You’re Saving a Life
• Many rescue pets come from neglect, abuse, or overcrowded shelters. By adopting, you’re giving them a second chance at a loving home.
• In many shelters, space is limited, and adoption helps free up resources for other animals in need.
2. You’re Gaining a Loyal Companion
• Rescue pets often form deep bonds with their adopters because they recognize they’ve been given a second chance.
• Many are incredibly grateful and loving, making them wonderful lifelong companions.
3. You’re Fighting Back Against Animal Cruelty
• Adopting from a shelter helps reduce demand for puppy mills, backyard breeders, and pet stores that often prioritize profit over animal welfare.
• It also supports ethical rescue efforts that work to save and rehabilitate abandoned animals.
4. Many Rescues Are Already Trained
• Many shelter pets are already house-trained, socialized, and even know basic commands, which can make the transition easier.
• Adult rescues often have established personalities, so you can find one that fits your lifestyle.
5. It’s More Affordable
• Adoption fees are generally much lower than buying from a breeder or pet store.
• Many rescues come spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, saving you additional costs.
6. You’re Promoting Responsible Pet Ownership
• By adopting, you’re encouraging others to consider rescues instead of supporting unethical breeding.
• It also raises awareness about the importance of spaying/neutering and responsible pet care.
7. Rescues Come in All Shapes, Sizes & Breeds
• If you’re looking for a specific breed, many breed-specific rescues exist.
• You can find pets of all ages, from playful puppies and kittens to calm, loving senior pets.
8. They Bring Joy, Love & Healing
• Rescue pets provide companionship, reduce stress, and improve mental well-being.
• They often have unique personalities and quirks that make them extra special.
Adopting a rescue pet is truly life-changing—not just for them, but for you too!
How do I choose the right pet for my lifestyle?
Choosing the right pet for your lifestyle is essential for a happy and successful adoption. Here are some key factors to consider:
1. Assess Your Living Situation
• House vs. Apartment – Large dogs or high-energy breeds may need more space, while small dogs or cats may adapt better to apartment living.
• Yard Access – A fenced yard can be great for active dogs, but daily walks can also meet exercise needs.
• Pet-Friendly Housing – If you rent, check your lease for pet policies, breed restrictions, or weight limits.
2. Consider Your Activity Level
• Active Lifestyle – If you love hiking, running, or outdoor adventures, consider a high-energy breed like a Border Collie, Labrador, or Pitbull.
• Laid-Back Lifestyle – If you prefer a more relaxed routine, a lower-energy dog, a senior pet, or a cat might be a better match.
3. Time Commitment
• Work Schedule – If you’re away long hours, a pet that requires constant attention (like a puppy) may not be ideal.
• Training & Socialization – Puppies need time for training, while adult or senior pets may already have basic manners.
• Grooming Needs – Some breeds require frequent grooming (e.g., Poodles, Huskies), while others are low-maintenance (e.g., Beagles, Pitbulls).
4. Experience Level
• First-Time Pet Owner – Some breeds or animals (like Huskies or working breeds) can be challenging for beginners. Look for easygoing, adaptable pets.
• Experienced Owner – If you’re comfortable with training and structure, you may be able to handle a high-energy or special-needs pet.
5. Household & Family Considerations
• Kids & Other Pets – If you have children or other animals, make sure the new pet is compatible and has a history of good interactions.
• Allergies – Consider hypoallergenic breeds if allergies are a concern.
6. Age & Breed Considerations
• Puppy/Kitten vs. Adult vs. Senior – Puppies and kittens require more training and time, while adult and senior pets tend to be calmer and may already be trained.
• Breed Characteristics – Research breed tendencies (energy levels, health issues, temperament) to find a good match.
7. Special Needs & Health Considerations
• Medical Needs – Be prepared for potential health issues, especially with senior or special-needs pets.
• Behavioral Needs – Some rescues may need extra patience, training, or rehabilitation due to past trauma.
8. Adoption vs. Fostering First
• If you’re unsure about long-term commitment, fostering is a great way to see if a pet fits your lifestyle before adopting permanently.
Final Tip: Let Personality Lead the Way
• While breed and age are factors, personality matters most! Spend time with different animals to see who you connect with. Many rescues have unexpected, amazing matches beyond breed stereotypes.
